Invite Behind the Scenes

The Attendant Exhibition

As I bring my awareness into different, more gentle domains in life, in the silence my once fleeting attention gradually lengthens, and presence unfurls like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon.

I find myself stopping by a bridge over which a cycle path traverses the canalised river Brue. The bridge is unusual because it is much wider than the cycle path, and I notice its structure is designed for something much heavier. As I pause a while to look at two elegant swans, the air suddenly erupts with birdsong. Instead of the murmuration’s of starlings in the winter, this part of the Somerset Levels in August is home to fleets of swallows residing in the willows, feasting on the abundance of winged insects that crowd the air.

I notice an information board, and intrigued by the strange bridge I read the history of this place, a place away from busy roads and towns. I realise that once the bridge carried a railway line, and before that a canal, and before that? Maybe an ancient ‘sweet track’ through the Avalon marshes? I take in a deep breath and sigh, my shoulders letting go of the tension that builds unnoticed when I am in the town.

Standing there surrounded by this secluded beauty I decide to change the way I have approached my paintings these last two years. From being in the Expectant waiting area of the last two years, painting views stolen by the motorcar I decide I will endeavour to find, explore and witness the stillness of the other old ways in Somerset. The ways where vegetation has reclaimed the ancient routes. Places where spirits from the past may still frequent, awaiting someone with ears to listen, eyes to see, and senses to resonate while they tell their tale.

Over the coming months, I am going to be diving into the heart of The Somerset Levels gathering the work for my next collection, 'The Attendant'. I would love for you to take this journey with me—through the writing, the field sketches, the odd slow video and the quiet moments by the water.

Notes from the Studio Floor

This practice of pulling over, breathing out the tension of the town, and allowing presence to unfurl is the central heartbeat of my upcoming e-course, 'The Art of Attendance.

While I am walking the old ways of Somerset and translating this stillness onto canvas, I am also finalising the practical exercises to help you anchor this exact presence in your own daily life, far away from the yoga studios of Glastonbury town.

If you would like to be part of the inner circle for this project, I have opened a quiet waiting list. Joining means you will receive early-bird access to the e-course, behind-the-scenes plein air videos, and private updates before the official release in my shop.
