I escaped the city after studying for one of the first UK degrees in Environmental Science and Ecology. As a hands-on mother, rather than pursuing one single life goal, I have found myself drawn back, time and again, to exploring the spaces between things, where different worlds, ideas and ways of being meet. These are often the places of greatest diversity, uncertainty and possibility, and a wellspring of creativity.
Through painting plein air watercolour landscapes; exploring the strangeness and charm of our dreamscapes; studying the ecology of bogs, meadows, or agricultural systems, the latter through a Masters by Research; or examining the frictions within our societies, I find myself returning to the same questions. What happens when we look beyond the familiar, challenge what we think we know, and allow space for the complexities of the other? Perhaps it is here, behind the masks we construct and the boundaries we maintain, that we begin to glimpse a richer understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit.
Whether exploring the Somerset levels, the wild Cornish coast, the inside of an ants nest, or the inner worlds of our dreams, through writing, painting or research I am drawn to looking beyond the mask. I invite you on my journey behind the scenes of the Theatre of Dreams.
