The Theatre of Dreams

Beyond the Mask: An exploration of the hidden landscape of the psyche.

Upcoming Book

I have always found it rather criminal when someone throws away a banana skin, an apple core or the tough outer leaves of a cabbage. Something inside me cries out, 'Compost it!' At the very least, return it to the earth. Nothing is truly wasted when we understand the cycles of nature. What appears to be discarded often contains the beginnings of something new.

I feel much the same about our dreams.

So many are simply thrown away. We wake, perhaps with a fleeting impression of something strange or unsettling, and then get on with the business of the day. Yet our dreams offer a direct connection with the deeper parts of ourselves, a nightly encounter with a world we rarely stop to explore.

I see our conscious lives as the tip of an iceberg, with the vast, numinous bulk of the psyche extending beneath the surface. Here lie the layers of our personal story, our instincts, our memories and our deeper Knowing. It is an immense inner landscape, rich with associations, symbols and possibilities for understanding.

Who wouldn't want to explore such a wealth of material, particularly when we encounter it every night?

Perhaps this is what saddens me most about our throwaway society. We have become so accustomed to discarding things that we risk overlooking the extraordinary value of what we already possess.

This book is an invitation to do something different.

Rather than treating dreams as random images or puzzles to be solved, I want to explore them as part of a living, interconnected inner world. Drawing on Jungian thought, symbolism and an ecological understanding of interconnected systems, we will explore the relationship between our conscious and unconscious lives, encounter the shadow and begin to recognise the significance of what might otherwise remain hidden.

This isn't about finding a fixed meaning for every dream. It is about learning to listen, to notice connections and to develop a more intimate relationship with the language of the psyche.

The book is taking shape

The manuscript is complete and I'm gathering peer reviews for a final edit.

Each chapter explores a particular aspect of dreamwork and includes a practical exercise, giving readers an opportunity to engage directly with their own dreams and discover what might emerge through that process.

I'd love to invite a small community of interested readers to follow the project as it develops.

Perhaps it's time we stopped throwing our dreams away.
